Finding Divine Confidence

“The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding…” – Nehemiah 2:20 (NIV)

You know those moments when everything seems stacked against you? That’s exactly where Nehemiah found himself. He was facing mockery, opposition, and probably more than a few raised eyebrows. But what strikes me most about his response is the beautiful blend of confidence and humility woven into these words.

Notice how he doesn’t say, “I’ll show them!” or “We’ll prove them wrong!” Instead, he anchors everything in this profound truth: “The God of heaven will give us success.” There’s something deeply moving about the way he places God at the center of the story while still rolling up his sleeves to do the work.

I’ve been thinking about how often I try to tackle challenges on my own strength. Maybe it’s a difficult conversation I need to have, a project that seems impossible, or a dream that feels too big. Like Nehemiah, I’m learning that true confidence doesn’t come from proving others wrong – it comes from knowing whose we are. We’re “his servants,” after all.

What catches my attention is the little word “start.” Nehemiah doesn’t promise overnight success or instant results. He simply commits to beginning. Sometimes, I get so overwhelmed by the size of a task that I forget that every great work of God started with someone simply being willing to take that first step.

The rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls wasn’t just about construction—it was about restoration, hope, and God’s faithfulness to His people. When Nehemiah says “we,” he’s not just talking about a construction crew; he’s talking about a community united under God’s purpose. This reminds me that our biggest challenges are rarely meant to be faced alone.

Prayer:

Father, give me Nehemiah’s courage to stand firm in the face of opposition. Help me remember that my confidence comes not from my own abilities but from knowing You are the God of heaven who gives success. Show me where to start rebuilding in my own life, and surround me with others who share Your vision. Thank You for being the foundation of every good work. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:

Identify one area in your life that needs “rebuilding.” Take one concrete step toward that restoration today, remembering that you’re not working alone – you’re working as God’s servant, under His direction and care.

Reflection Questions:

1. Where in my life do I need to shift from self-reliance to God-reliance?

2. What “walls” in my life or community need rebuilding?

3. Who has God placed in my life to partner with me in His work?
