After nearly 16 years of walking with Jesus, each birthday becomes an opportunity to reflect on His faithfulness and the wisdom He's taught me along the way.

Here are 36 lessons I've learned - some through grace, others through growth, and many through stumbling forward in faith.

A birthday cake with candles on it is on a table.

The Foundation of Love

  • God's Love is Unconditional: His love isn't earned - it's freely given. Every morning I'm reminded that His love precedes my efforts.

"We love because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

The Power of Simple Prayer

  • Keep Prayer Real: Prayer doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful. Some of my deepest moments with God have been in simple, honest conversations.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." (Philippians 4:6)

The Beauty of Community

  • We Need Each Other: Community isn't optional - it's essential. Growth happens best when we're connected to other believers.

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together." (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Freedom from the Past

  • Your Past Doesn't Define You: Those old mistakes and regrets? They're not your identity anymore. Christ has made you new.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Divine Timing

  • Trust God's Timing: His timing is perfect, even when it feels slow. I've learned that delays often become divine appointments.

"But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." (2 Peter 3:8)

Finding Joy in Trials

  • Joy Transcends Circumstances: Some of my deepest joy has come in seasons of challenge. God's presence makes this possible.

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds." (James 1:2)

The Value of Small Faith

  • Faithfulness in Little Things: Those small daily choices matter more than occasional big gestures. Consistency shapes character.

"One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much." (Luke 16:10)

Scripture's Living Nature

  • The Bible Gets Better: Every time I open God's Word, I find new treasures. It's truly alive and active.

"Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart." (Jeremiah 15:16)

The Comparison Trap

  • Stay in Your Lane: Comparison steals joy. Your journey with God is unique and beautiful.

"But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor." (Galatians 6:4)

The Power of Forgiveness

  • Freedom Through Forgiving: Forgiveness isn't just for the other person - it sets you free too.

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

Divine Purpose in Brokenness

  • Beauty from Ashes: God uses broken people to do beautiful things. Our weaknesses become windows for His light.

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Lifestyle Worship

  • Beyond Sunday Morning: Worship is a lifestyle, not an event. Every moment can be sacred when offered to God.

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1)

The Practice of Gratitude

  • Thankfulness Changes Everything: Gratitude shifts our perspective from what we lack to what we have.

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Identity in Christ

  • Who God Says You Are: Your identity in Christ matters more than any other label or achievement.

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession." (1 Peter 2:9)

The Power of Rest

  • Sacred Rest: Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is rest. It's an act of trust.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Abundant Grace

  • Grace Upon Grace: God's grace is bigger than your biggest failure and deeper than your deepest shame.

"Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more." (Romans 5:20)

The Personal Holy Spirit

  • More Than Power: The Holy Spirit is a person to be known, not just a power to be accessed.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever." (John 14:16)

Service as Worship

  • Finding Jesus in Others: When we serve others, we're actually serving Jesus himself.

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40)

Strength in Weakness

  • Perfect Weakness: Our weaknesses aren't obstacles to God's power - they're opportunities for it.

"Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Unconditional Acceptance

  • No Performance Needed: God's love isn't based on what you do but on who He is.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life... nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)

True Humility

  • Strength in Lowliness: Humility isn't thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." (James 4:10)

Trust His Plans

  • Better Than Our Best: When God rewrites our plans, He's writing a better story than we could imagine.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Power of Your Story

  • Your Story Matters: Your testimony has power because it shows God's faithfulness in real life.

"And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony." (Revelation 12:11)

Living Word

  • Active and Alive: The Bible isn't just an ancient book - it's alive and speaks to modern life.

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword." (Hebrews 4:12)

Prayer's True Purpose

  • Changed Hearts: Prayer changes us more than it changes circumstances.

"Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving." (Colossians 4:2)

Presence Over Presents

  • Seeking His Face: God's presence matters more than His presents. Being with Him beats getting from Him.

"One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life." (Psalm 27:4)

Simple Faith

  • Childlike Trust: Sometimes the most mature faith looks a lot like a child's simple trust.

"Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." (Mark 10:15)

Identity Beyond Struggles

  • More Than Your Battle: Your struggles are real, but they're not your identity.

"No longer do I call you servants... but I have called you friends." (John 15:15)

God's Multifaceted Love

  • Tender and Fierce: God's love is both gentle enough to comfort and strong enough to transform.

"The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness." (Zephaniah 3:17)

Small Steps of Obedience

  • Little by Little: Big breakthroughs often come through small acts of obedience.

"If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones." (Luke 16:10)

Iron Sharpens Iron

  • Growth Through Community: True character is revealed and refined in relationship with others.

"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)

Silent But Present

  • God's Quiet Presence: God's silence doesn't mean His absence. Sometimes He's most active when He seems most quiet.

"Be strong and courageous... for it is the LORD your God who goes with you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Victory Through Praise

  • Worship Wins Wars: Praise isn't just a response to victory - it's often the path to victory.

"Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!" (Psalm 150:6)

Purpose in Pain

  • Ministry from Mess: Your biggest struggles often become your most powerful ministry.

"Blessed be the God... who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Unwavering Faithfulness

  • He Remains Faithful: God's faithfulness doesn't depend on ours. He's consistent when we're not.

"If we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself." (2 Timothy 2:13)

Ever-Increasing Glory

  • Better Every Day: The journey with Jesus gets sweeter as you go. Each day brings new revelations of His goodness.

"But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day." (Proverbs 4:18)

These 36 lessons weren't learned in a classroom but through daily walks, stumbles, victories, and surrenders with Jesus. Each represents countless moments of grace, growth, and revelation.

The beautiful thing about walking with God is that there's always more to learn, more ways to grow, and more of His love to discover.

Looking back on these lessons fills me with gratitude, and looking forward fills me with anticipation.

My battle with anxiety didn’t surface until I started serving as a youth pastor in 2012. I walked into that season full of energy and passion, ready to serve God and pour into the lives of teenagers. But soon, panic attacks began appearing out of nowhere, and irrational fears started to take hold. There were times I truly felt like I was dying, as if my body and mind were betraying me. I tried medicine, hoping it would help—but it didn’t. In fact, it only made things worse. My wife, seeing how much it was affecting me, ended up flushing it down the toilet. What she did next changed everything. Scripture as a Lifeline She began writing Scripture on index cards and placing them all throughout the house—on the bathroom mirror, the kitchen counter, the bedroom dresser—places I went often. Each card was a gentle reminder of who God is, His faithfulness, and His promises. I started meditating on verses like Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Or Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” The more I paused to meditate on God’s Word, the more I found myself finding peace in God’s Word during anxiety . It was a peace that didn’t make sense from a worldly perspective. Anxiety didn’t disappear overnight, but its grip on me began to fade. How to Surrender Anxiety to God What I’ve learned is that surrender is the key. Anxiety and irrational fear haven’t gone away—they still show up—but now I have a choice in the moment. I can hand my fear over to God and say, “Lord, I trust You with this, even if I don’t understand it right now.” That’s the first step in learning how to surrender anxiety to God . When I do, His peace fills the gaps anxiety leaves behind. Instead of letting fear dictate my thoughts and actions, I use it as a signal to pause, pray, and meditate on Scripture. Surrender doesn’t mean I never struggle—it means I refuse to face it alone. Trusting God When You Feel Anxious Anxiety thrives on control—our desire to manage every outcome. But real freedom comes from trusting God when you feel anxious . It’s choosing to believe His promises even when your circumstances scream otherwise. For me, this has meant turning anxious thoughts into prayers, speaking Scripture out loud, and reminding myself that God’s strength is greater than my fear. Trust isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily practice. Your Turn to Experience Peace If you’re walking through anxiety or fear, know this: God’s Word is alive and powerful. His promises are true, and He meets us exactly where we are. Start small: write a few verses on cards, place them where you’ll see them, and let them speak to your heart. Meditate on them. Pray through them. Let His truth sink in. Over time, you’ll discover that finding peace in God’s Word during anxiety is more than possible—it’s God’s gift. You’ll learn how to surrender anxiety to God in the moment, and you’ll grow in trusting God when you feel anxious about the future. Remember: anxiety doesn’t define you—God does. Surrender your fears to Him today, and let His Word guide you to peace that lasts.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 (NIV) As a parent, I often catch myself saying, “I’m tired” far more than I ever expected. I’m a father of four energetic boys under the age of 10, which means our home is full of noise, movement, and endless activity. In this season of parenting, Matthew 11:28 has taken on a deeper meaning for me. I know what it is to feel weary—and I know the only true rest comes from Jesus. What Kind of Rest Does Jesus Offer? This verse isn’t simply about catching up on sleep. Jesus offers something greater: soul rest. His rest is a peace that quiets the noise within, even when life outside feels chaotic. A nap can refresh the body, but only Jesus can refresh the soul. Bringing Our Burdens to Jesus When we bring Him our exhaustion—whether from parenting, work, or daily responsibilities—He doesn’t just lighten our load. He gives us Himself. His presence restores us in a way nothing else can. An Invitation for the Weary If you’re feeling weighed down today—by family, career, or simply the pressures of life—hear the invitation of Matthew 11:28. You don’t have to carry it all alone. Come to Jesus. Sit with Him. Receive His peace. Let Him give you rest that truly restores. Prayer for Rest Jesus, I bring You my tiredness, my worries, and my burdens. Thank You for inviting me to come close and find rest in You. Refresh my soul today. Amen.
